The Natural Degradation of Microcystins (Cyanobacterial Hepatotoxins) in Fresh Water – the Future of Modern Treatment Systems and Water Quality Improvement

چکیده
The increasing occurrence of hepatotoxic cyanobacterial blooms in fresh waters is one of the most serious risks to human health in the 21 century. Therefore, proper management of waters contaminated with cyanobacteria requires elaboration of the appropriate methods to remove cyanobacterial hepatotoxins-microcystins (MCs) from the environment. Many chemical and physical procedures have been proposed to remove MCs from fresh waters, but more attention is now paid to more environmentally friendly and cost-efficient techniques for MCs reduction. Therefore, this paper presents a summary of the current knowledge concerning the possible use of natural processes with the participation of environmental bacteria for MCs degradation in

Toxins produced in cyanobacterial water blooms – toxicity and risks
Cyanobacterial blooms in freshwaters represent a major ecological and human health problem worldwide. This paper briefly summarizes information on major cyanobacterial toxins (hepatotoxins, neurotoxins etc.) with special attention to microcystins-cyclic heptapeptides with high acute and chronic toxicities. Besides discussion of human health risks, microcystin ecotoxicology and consequent ecolog...
متن کاملEditorial on the Special Issue “Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and Public Health: Progress and Current Challenges”
Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) affect the quality of fresh and marine waters and adversely affect both animals and humans. Public health risks include exposure to toxins through consumption of contaminated drinking water and fish and shellfish, and by recreating on or in contaminated waters. Federal and State professionals and researchers contributed to this Special Issue on HABs and Public Health...
متن کاملHealth Risk Assessment of Cyanobacterial (Blue-green Algal) Toxins in Drinking Water
Cyanobacterial toxins have caused human poisoning in the Americas, Europe and Australia. There is accumulating evidence that they are present in treated drinking water supplies when cyanobacterial blooms occur in source waters. With increased population pressure and depleted groundwater reserves, surface water is becoming more used as a raw water source, both from rivers and lakes/reservoirs. A...
متن کاملFirst report of microcystins from a Brazilian isolate of the cyanobacterium
This is the first report on microcystins, cyclic heptapeptide hepatotoxins, from Brazilian water supplies. A colony isolate (NPJB-l) of the colonial cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa from Lagoa das Gan;as, Sao Paulo, was cultured under non-axenic conditions. Exponential phase cells were harvested, concentrated and lyophilized for mouse bioassays and toxin extraction. The LDlOO oflyophilized...
متن کاملBiodegradation of Microcystins during Gravity-Driven Membrane (GDM) Ultrafiltration
Gravity-driven membrane (GDM) ultrafiltration systems require little maintenance: they operate without electricity at ultra-low pressure in dead-end mode and without control of the biofilm formation. These systems are already in use for water purification in some regions of the world where adequate treatment and distribution of drinking water is not readily available. However, many water bodies...
